The Benefits of an Airbnb
Better Lighting and Photographic Backdrops
One of the biggest advantages of an Airbnb over a standard hotel room is the lighting and overall aesthetic. Many Airbnbs are homes or apartments with large windows that allow in tons of beautiful, natural light. This is a photographer’s dream! Great lighting means I can get those gorgeous, airy getting-ready photos we all love. The decor is also usually more interesting and photogenic than a plain hotel room.
More Space to Move Around
Airbnbs tend to be much more spacious than your standard hotel room. This opens up more possibilities for different photograph angles and compositions. It also allows the entire wedding party to get ready together without feeling cramped. More space means more fun candid moments to capture!
A Homelike, Relaxing Vibe
There’s just something about being in an actual home versus a hotel that feels more relaxing on such a busy, high-energy day. An Airbnb lets you have that coveted “home” vibe as you’re getting ready. You can lounge on the couch, make a toast in the kitchen, and just feel more at ease overall.
Tips for Choosing the Right Airbnb
Book Early
Airbnbs book up far in advance for popular wedding dates and locations. I recommend clients secure their Airbnb 6-12 months before the wedding, minimum. This ensures you get a place you love.
Vet the Locations
Pay close attention to the natural lighting situation and the overall photogenic nature of each Airbnb space. Is it bright and airy or dark and cave-like? Are the backdrops pleasing to the eye or too busy and distracting? Send a few options to your photographer and get their input too!
Stay Near the Venue
You’ll want to choose an Airbnb that’s relatively close and convenient to your ceremony and reception venues. This cuts down on travel time so you can stay on schedule.
Look at Reviews
Of course, read each Airbnb’s reviews thoroughly. Descriptions can be deceiving, so make sure past guests have reported it to be clean, spacious, well-appointed, and an all-around great experience.
Making the Most of Your Airbnb
Arrive the Night Before
My number one tip is to book the Airbnb for the night before your wedding too. This allows you to wake up at the location already, avoiding any transit morning of and maximizing the amount of time there. It also enables you to have your dress, accessories, and everything ready to go first thing.
Start Early
Speaking of an early start, be sure to build in enough time at the Airbnb to get ready calmly and savor all those sweet pre-wedding moments. There’s nothing rushed about an Airbnb since you’re in a home-like environment. Take your time and enjoy it!
Clear Clutter Daily
To keep things looking photogenic at all times, do a quick neat-up and clear any visible clutter each time you leave the Airbnb. Or, designate a backroom or corner to stash all bags, clothing racks, and gear so it’s out of sight. A tidy, magazine-worthy space is best for gorgeous getting-ready photos.
Using an Airbnb to get ready for your wedding is such a positive experience all around. The laid-back home environment helps you stay relaxed and present. Not to mention, the spacious layout and lovely lighting set the stage for stunning getting-ready photos! As a photographer, I’m always thrilled when my couples choose this route. It elevates the entire experience and ensures a smooth, joyful start to your big day. Let’s discuss your wedding plans!
